Water features and bird baths are usually too deep for bees and butterflies, which need to drink just like all other creatures. In fact, wild bees need water not only to drink and cool down, but also to dissolve crystallised honey and produce larval food. It has sloping sides and pebbles so the bees won’t drown (they can’t swim), and also gives butterflies an easy landing place to access shallow water.
